I am a Pediatric Emergency Physician, Medical Director for Children’s of Alabama Emergency Department and a Professor of Pediatrics. I helped found and currently lead the Injury Free Coalition for Kids (IFCK) of Birmingham.  I have served on IFCK’s board of directors and publication committee. Through IFCK, I have participated in multicenter studies on child passenger safety.  I also am co-director for Injury Prevention/Child Advocacy education for the University Pediatric residency training program.

I have been fortunate to find community partners for Allstate Foundation “Little Hands” playgrounds in two high risk areas of our city.   Working with the Board of Education, I began our teen driving events which we have held for the past five years locally.  This year, these events go state wide to reach more teen drivers. We routinely host Baby Safety Showers in conjunction with the local Health Department.

I am active in our state AAP chapter and am Chair for Alabama’s Injury Prevention Committee which received national recognition in 2008 for a statewide ATV danger awareness campaign. Based on local data, I found many teens had not received any pediatrician counseling. Our committee was awarded funding to create a toolkit for pediatricians to guide discussions with teens and parents.  For this work, I was recognized by both the state AAP and the Alabama Institute of Transportation Engineers.

I am seeking election to the COIVPP executive committee and would bring injury prevention experience and a true desire to work toward reducing injuries to our infants, children, adolescents and young adults.
