Sophia McFarland

Sophia McFarland is a divorced/single mother of three beautiful daughters ( Breanna Eatmon-24, Arielle McFarland-16, and Morgan McFarland-12) and grandmother of an adorable 4 month of baby girl, Christiana Olivia Brooks. She is an Advocate, Parent and Youth Support Team Lead Volunteer, and newly approved Board Member for the Sickle Cell Foundation of Birmingham, AL (Central Alabama Chapter). She’s also a former educator for Birmingham City Schools under the department of Special Education and Tier II Reading Intervention Programs.

Sophia’s daughter, Arielle McFarland was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease at the age of two weeks. There, the medical journey with Children’s Hospital began. Her family was very blessed with an opportunity to attend the Comprehensive Classes administered by the Hem/Onc Team in Clinic 8. The education and support provided encouraged and gave her strength to reach out and help other parents with children living with Sickle Cell Disease.

Sophia’s many unpleasant experiences with Arielle’s health and the lack of support in the classroom setting, inspired her to enroll in grad school for Special Education. While attending graduate school and teaching in Special Education, Sophia began reaching out to the Sickle Cell Foundation and other parents of children with Sickle Cell to identify the needs and challenges they were experiencing. Her strength from God, passion and love for children, Sickle Cell Disease, and family advocacy, lead her to spearhead “The Village” a Parent and Youth Support Group at the Sickle Cell Foundation. In addition to “The Village”, she also joined the Family Centered Rounding team at Children’s of Alabama of which she is beyond elated to be a part of such an amazing group of people.
