Dr. Michael A. Lopez is a pediatric neuromuscular physician-scientist interested in solving health challenges for children by unraveling the genetic and molecular complexity of neuromuscular disorders. He is Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham / Children’s Hospital of Alabama.


He earned his M.D. from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. at Baylor College of Medicine. He completed child neurology residency at Baylor College of Medicine, where he served as chief resident. He then did neuromuscular medicine fellowship at Stanford University.

Dr. Lopez’s clinical interests include multi-disciplinary care for neuromuscular patients and nerve conduction and electromyography. He has a special interest in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and solving molecular diagnosis for children with undiagnosed myopathies. His NINDS K08-funded research efforts are focused on understanding the underlying pathophysiology of dystrophic skeletal muscle using mouse and cell models of DMD. Dr. Lopez is an awardee of the Child Neurology Career Development Program (K12), the Kaul Pediatric Research Institute, and NIH NIAMS Pediatric Loan Repayment Program.
