Suresh Boppana is a Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology and Hugh Dillon MD Endowed Professor in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine. The focus of his research over the past 25 years has been to understand the natural history and pathogenesis of maternal and congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV). His research has documented the importance of non-primary maternal infections to the overall burden of congenital CMV infection and the impact of congenital CMV in highly seropositive settings including developing countries. Leveraging their virology expertise, along with his colleagues, Drs. Britt and Pinninti, established a SARS-CoV-2 natural history study at UAB and Children’s of Alabama early during the pandemic. The ongoing studies are focused on delineating the natural history and disease burden of COVID-19 infections, the relationship between adaptive immunity and SARS-CoV-2 persistence in immunocompromised children including those on cancer chemotherapy, and pediatric COVID-19 vaccine trials. He is also the co-medical director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at the Children’s of Alabama since 2016.
