Overview
There have been important advances in neonatology in the past few decades.  Using evidence-based medicine, this conference will describe the top ten recent advances in newborn care and will also include discussions on infant nutrition, genetic testing, blood transfusions and future potential therapies in Neonatology.

Objectives
Upon completion of this live activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the major discoveries that have brought neonatology into the 21st century.
  2. Describe how each of these advances has contributed to improved outcomes for ill infants.
  3. Describe the basic nutritional requirements of term and preterm neonates.
  4. List the indications for genetic testing in the newborn infant.
  5. Describe how caffeine may improve outcomes in preterm infants.
  6. Describe how therapeutic hypothermia improves neurodevelopmental outcome of term and near-term infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
  7. List a number of failed therapies in neonatology and discuss why these failed therapies should not be used in infants.
  8. Describe the pathophysiology of a patent ductus arteriosus and discuss current controversies regarding management of PDA.
  9. List the current methods for managing hyperbilirubinemia and describe possible future therapies for hyperbilirubinemia.
  10. Describe how antenatal steroids improve neonatal outcomes and the use of postnatal steroids in infants.
  11. Discuss the use of blood transfusions in the newborn and evidence-based thresholds for transfusions in the neonate.
  12. List and discuss several potential new therapies in neonatology and how these may benefit future babies.
