Overview

The June NICKS program is a VIRTUAL course. Zoom information will be emailed to attendees prior to the course. 

NICKS is a one and a half day program. The first day primarily focuses on didactics while the second half day focuses on application of the didactics through live simulations and case studies.


Objectives
  1. Discuss the timing of kidney support therapy for neonates and infants with AKI, FO, and CKF
  2. Describe the terminology of KST
  3. Discuss elements of the PD prescription
  4. Discuss specifics for different KST machines available for small children
  5. Discuss access for patients who need KST
  6. Compare the options, benefits, risks, setup, complications and monitoring for different anticoagulation options
  7. Discuss rationale regarding blood flow and how to prescribe an appropriate rate
  8. Review options for priming circuits and the rationale for blood primes
  9. Acquire strategies for optimizing blood prime procedures
  10. Discuss elements of a CVVH/CVVHD prescription
  11. Discuss filtration fraction
  12. Discuss approaches to ultrafiltration rate prescription
  13. Troubleshoot potential ultrafiltration issues and discuss plans to address these issues
  14. Review hematocrit scenarios
  15. Review options for KST on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation
  16. Discuss approaches to making decision to start KST in ICU
  17. Discuss cardio-pulmonary disease in neonates on KST
  18. Discuss strategies to have the best collaborative practices for your KST program
  19. Discuss cases of end-stage kidney disease in patients who required ECMO and KT and overview of their current
  20. Consider the perspective of the parents and the responsibilities of taking care of babies on KST
